Q: I am a complete noob! I have no skillz and am most definitely NOT hard core! Does this place cater to people like me?
A: Why yes! Yes it does! We actually prefer complete beginners because it is easier to train someone who has a blank slate then someone who has a ton of experience which then we would refer them to an MMA GYM!
Q: Why should I sign up with you guys as opposed to any other martial arts school out there?
What lineage/trophies/tournaments/insert prestigious thing here do you have!?! Do you even black belt bro?
A: Short answer: We teach you a focused program on the self defense moves you will need, maximizing your efficiency and time spent training. A minimum of three months is recommended to "know about" the bare minimum. But to truly know the techniques, they must be drilled and practiced for longer.
We highly recommend one year of complete dedication. By then you should be able to take on "almost" any thug on the street. (Note the words "COMPLETE DEDICATION")
Two years will allow you to take on people who have some skill in martial arts.
Three years or more will make you a bad@$$ and you will have the opportunity to be an instructor! (Ask for more details.)
Long Answer: The reason why you should sign up at the Zenpan Dojo is because we believe there are key self defense techniques and strategies that need to be focused on. We throw out most moves that are either too technical or require a ton of strength. We break it down into seven main philosophies when it comes to self defense.
The first philosophy is gratitude to God. The main reason behind this is to set your mind in the most positive manner. This means being grateful for your life and the lives of others, doing your best to help yourself and others and fully realizing and accepting your weaknesses (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual). Only when you accept your weaknesses can you improve. We begin and end every class with a prayer of gratitude! No, we are not trying to bring you into a cult or convert you in anyway! If you choose not to join for prayer that is totally fine with us! We simply ask you respectfully observe silence for a few moments until the prayer is done.
The second philosophy is the three combat zones which are:
Zone 1) Stand Up Striking - Kicks, punches, any kind of striking while standing up
Zone 2) Stand Up Grappling - Grabs, holds and takedowns while standing
Zone 3) Ground-submissions, sweeps and escapes while on the ground
Understanding the three zones and realizing that they are all one cohesive way of combat leads to the third philosophy, "The Flow of Combat"
The third philosophy of the Zenpan Dojo is "The Flow of Combat". Initially, combat IS CHAOS! At least, to the average person. You really don't know what is going to happen in any given fight. However, there is actually a "Flow of Combat", a certain rhythm and flow and the more you train and learn techniques, the more you realize that you can actually start making order out of the chaos. You begin to learn how to do things like counter attack, manipulate an opponent to move the way you want them to move and even be able to avoid conflict completely, never having to use your self-defense skills...EVER! (Which is the ultimate goal!)
The fourth philosophy is safety first! We focus a lot on escapes from holds, mounts and positions as well as defensive and evasive maneuvers so that you don't get caught in a bad place. Once you're "safe" (and we use that term very loosely!) that's when the counter attack or the running away can begin!
The fifth philosophy is "tenacity" and "the will to fight" are the keys to mastering self defense. This isn't some light and fluffy self-defense class. You will be experiencing some tough training which will test you physically and mentally. We drill into your mind that you must put your entire being into your training!
The sixth philosophy is "make it educational". We give you a handout with the techniques you learn in class so you can go home, review them and mark the dates that you actually practiced. You can also refer back to it when you're wondering what you need to work on. All the moves will be available to you as you collect more and more handouts. In time, you will realize how much you have learned!
The seventh philosophy is "repetition is key". We are passionate about you truly learning the techniques and being able to pull them off when you need them. Only by constant and consistent drilling will this be possible. The flow of the class is one week is focused on striking then the next week is grappling. We alternate between these two focuses throughout the year.
Q: What should I bring to class?
A: You should always bring a water bottle and towel. You can also bring a pair of boxing gloves and wraps which can be purchased at the Zenpan Dojo.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: We have plans starting off from $20 to $160. Come in and we can discuss a plan that fits your budget!
Look out for our special deals that happen throughout the year!
Q: I want to train there early morning/late at night but the time isn't available!
A: Let us know what you're interested in and if there is enough people demanding that time we will open a class for it!
